Southern Hospitality at Cave 9!

First things first, Cave 9 could use your help!  It's hard to keep vibrant DIY music spaces andd innovative youth programming alive in places that are off the radar and far away from industry and foundation support.

The IRS came after Cave 9 when they became legit, giving yet one more reason to encourage these kinds of spaces to be underground rather than as accessible and established as they could be.  To some organizations, $5K is a drop in the bucket, but to ones that are all volunteer and paying out door receipts to artists, it's an endless project of squeezing blood out of turnips so to speak.

Everybody's Down. The Smell and No Age in the New Yorker? It's True.

Some neat writer named Sasha Frere-Jones, snuck in a great piece on the band No Age in this month's New Yorker.
Of course it makes perfect sense that they would eventually get big and find themselves featured in many notable publications, what with their charm and musical talent, but the repeated mentions of the hands that fed them (Jim Smith and the Smell) are a pleasant surprise.   That a publication like the New Yorker is picking up on the scrappy and resilient all-ages spot in LA is a testament to the way places like the smell feed their scenes and incubate some of the best new ideas in music.  Yay for those lovely folks at the Smell.

Who's making a local impact? AMP orgs Elementz and Vera get recognized!

Elementz Hip Hop Youth Arts Center, one of the few of it's kind, was awarded a $108,500 grant from a local women's philanthropy group. The Cincinnati Business Courier explains that:

"Elementz uses hip-hop arts to teach young people in the downtown and Over-the-Rhine area to help create a safe environment, with respect for people and property. Islord Allah, director of the West End-based center, said the group will use the money to add more staff and expand the center's hours." Read the article.

In another Impact Award competition, the Vera Project was nominated and awarded by MySpace users for this month's Impact award meaning they will get 10K and lot of press.

The Vera Project is an all-ages, volunteer-run nonprofit that fuels personal and community transformation through music and arts events produced in partnership with young people in Seattle.

YMR and the Beginning of a Movement

Ever heard of a youth-run record label? Well, there are a handful in the US and there can and should be more. AMP's third piece in Wiretap on movement building in local music scenes spotlights Youth Movement Records in Oakland.

Written from the perspective a young organizer trying to get a similar project off the ground in New Orleans, YMR alumni Kameron Moore-Mitchell (aka the Sekond Element) recounts her experience in YMR while passing on start up and structural information for people interested in starting a record company that doubles as a youth development project. Turn the Beat Around: AMP's Best Practice Series in Wiretap

AMP just launched a 10 part series in Wiretap Magazine dissecting some of the most successful youth music organizations in the US.

In 2007, fourteen youth, music, arts and activism organizations participated in peer exchanges. The purpose: To spotlight and share tips and tricks of DIY and grassroots youth music organizations. Though there are hundreds to choose from, we decided on ten organizations that illustrate the spectrum of the burgeoning network of organizations putting cultural creation and access in the hands of young people.

We focused on a different aspect of each organization--their most compelling story or characteristic that other organizers could learn from. They include:

• 924 Gilman (Berkeley, CA) - Participatory Structure
• Neutral Zone (Ann Arbor, MI) - Youth Involvement
• Youth Movement Records (Oakland, CA) - Youth Recording Prorgram
• Cave Nine Music and Arts (Birmingham, AL) - All-ages Music Show Production
• ABC No Rio (New York, NY) - Space Trials and Tribulations
• AS220/Broad Street Studios (Providence, RI) - $$
• Batey Urbano (Chicago, IL) - Neighborhood Connections
• Vera Project (Seattle, WA) - Building Relationships with Local Government
• Elementz Hip Hop Youth Arts Center (Cincinnati, OH) - Getting Start Up Help
• The Spot (Denver, CO) - Providing support to new organizations

These organizations range from 30-year-old veterans of the field to newcomers putting a powerful new spin on the marriage of youth, art and activism. Most importantly, they are making it, and coming up with crafty ways of doing it.

All stories are researched and written by members of organizations similarly using independent music -- punk, hip hop, rock, noise, electronic, and more -- as a vehicle for change on the personal, music scene, and broader community levels.

ABC No Rio to demolish and replace its building

BY DAVID FREEDLANDER
Originally Published on Newsday.com

Hundreds of butterfly wings made out of grapefruit skin hang above the entranceway to ABC No Rio, the famed art collective on the Lower East Side.

The wings, which have been there since the "Ides of March" exhibit in the spring, soon must come down - and the rest of the Rivington Street building with them. ABC No Rio announced last month that it is unable to salvage the 19th century building.

Instead, the group has embarked on an ambitious effort to raise $2 million to break ground on a new building at the same location.

"We originally thought we would only have to raise $100,000, but as time passes things have become more costly," said Steve Englander, the group's executive director. "We originally planned to do a renovation, but it became obvious it just makes more sense to do a reconstruction."

ABC No Rio's tenement-style building was constructed sometime between 1820 and 1860. The original two-story wood structure was expanded several times over the decades, creating the present sagging, warren-like building.

Architect Paul Castrucci, who is designing the new building, said he sees a certain virtue in the original building's decrepitude.

"I wish there was some substance of it left to keep, but I have to believe there is such a thing as progress," Castrucci said.

He envisions the new building as a series of less cramped, more intimate spaces, better suited to ABC No Rio's galleries, art classes and famous Saturday matinee all-ages punk-rock shows.
